As an environmental engineer trained in combining molecular and microbiological tools with
geochemistry, my research focuses on the applications and implications of biological processes
that relate to water quality and reuse. With regards to the Nuclear Geosciences program this
means applying this cross-disciplinary perspective towards investigating bacterially-mediated
redox transformations of both metals and radionuclides. Uranium is a widespread water
contaminant that can be immobilized through bacterially-mediated reduction - presumably through
precipitation of the mineral uraninite. My work focuses on understanding these processes in the
laboratory, the geochemical products formed, and the relevance of these findings to the field
setting with the goal of evaluating the efficacy of in situ uranium immobilization.
